Alipurduar takes measures to ensure healthy food to residents

first_imgKolkata: The Alipurduar district administration is taking all possible measures to ensure that the residents get healthy and safe food after it received umpteenth number of complaints about food adulteration and unhygienic practices.”We have found that more than 99 percent of the hotels and restaurants based here are functioning only with trade licence. They claimed ignorance of the fact that they need to have the licence from the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for running their business. Moreover, in a number of hotels, the kitchens were found unhygienic and have become breeding grounds for rats, cockroaches and other insects. The food quality in a number of hotels was also a major cause of concern,” said Nikhil Nirmal, District Magistrate, Alipurduar. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeThe administration has already sealed 3 leading hotels for not possessing proper licence and adhering to food safety standards. Showcause notice was served right on the spot.A follow up raid was conducted on Wednesday and two more shops including a noted sweet shop was closed down for dishing out sweets of inferior quality.”In the sweet shop, we have found sweets with fungus that was ready to be served to the customers,” a senior district official said. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedThe district administration has made arrangements for accepting on spot applications for FSSAI licences to ensure that no edible food is sold without valid licence which is mandatory as per law.”Our food division is buzzing with worried hotel owners making a beeline to get licences after the raid and stringent action taken by us. The kitchens of the hotels are also being overhauled apprehending punitive measures,” the DM added. It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the recently held administrative meeting at Alipurduar had directed the DM to take proactive steps to ensure that the residents get the right kind of healthy and safe food. A senior district official said as the post of food inspector was lying vacant in the Alipurduar civic body, the DM took initiative to rope in a food inspector from Jalpaiguri for supervising the raid on back to back Wednesdays in the district. The food drives were also videographed.”We have held meetings with the local business chambers and have made it clear that both trade licence from the local civic body and FSAAI licence are mandatory for food business. There should be no compromise with the quality of food,” Nirmalreiterated.last_img read more

HIDCO to celebrate Rosogolla Day on Nov 14 at Misti Hub

first_imgKolkata: Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) is going to celebrate ‘Rosogolla Day’ on November 14, the day when Bengal’s Rosogolla got Geographic Identification (GI) tag.Senior officials of HIDCO along with the members of Rosogolla Association will meet on Tuesday to chalk out the programme. The function will be held at Misti Hub in New Town. There will be a discussion on Rosogolla in which noted Kolkata historian Haripada Bhowmick and others will take part. Apart from selling sweets, Misti Hub is coming up as a cultural point where musical programmes and discussions on the history of Bengali sweets are held Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifefrequently. Rosogolla is Bengal’s great pride and it is amazing to note that Rabindranath Tagore had a “special weakness” for sponge Rosogolla of Nabin Chandra Das, popularly known as Nabin moira (sweet maker). In “Antaranga Rabindranath” by Dr Pashupati Bhattacharya, one gets an intimate description of Tagore’s love for Rosogolla. Dr Bhattacharya, a medical practitioner took lessons in Rabindrasangeet from Tagore and was also a close associate of Dr BC Roy. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedAfter coming to know from Dr Bhattacharya that he was a resident of Bagbazar, Tagore one day inquired whether he had tasted the sponge Rosogolla of Bagbazar. On getting a negative reply from Dr Bhattacharya, Tagore asked him to have it once and requested him to bring the same for him. Not only did Tagore himself appreciated sponge Rosogolla, he also presented it to his near and dear ones and anyone who requested him to recommend. Dr Bhattacharya, though a resident of the area, did not know about sponge Rosogolla. However, on inquiry he found that it was available at the shop of Nabin moira, popularly known as the “Columbus of Bengal.” As per instruction from Gurudev, Dr Bhattacharya had two Rosogollas and bought one handi (earthen pot in which Rosogollas were given to customers) for Tagore. Tagore was very happy to receive it but could not talk to him as on the next morning he was scheduled to leave for Santiniketan. Nearly after two months, Dr Bhattacharya received a letter from Tagore informing him about the date when he was coming back to Jorasanko along with a request to get another handi of Rosogolla for him. Dr Bhattacharya went to Nabin moira’s shop but on that day all Rosogollas were sold. Finding no other option, he bought the same from another shop and presented it to Tagore. Gurudev was not at all happy with the taste and told him: “I found the taste to be different” and then jokingly said: “You have deceived me. It is not the same Rosogolla.” On the next occasion, when Dr Bhattacharya presented another handi of the ‘sponge Rosogolla’, Tagore remarked: “This is real Bagbazar Rosogolla. It melts in your mouth.” Tagore often asked his near ones to go to Bagbazar and enjoy Nabin moira’s Rosogolla.last_img read more

Soft drinks bad for your memory diet soda even worse

first_imgIf you thought switching to diet soda can help you avoid the ill effects associated with sugary soft drinks, think again! Researchers have found that while drinking sugary beverages frequently may lead to poorer memory, daily intake of diet soda may increase the risk of stroke and dementia. Both sugary and diet drinks correlated with accelerated brain ageing, according to the findings published in two separate studies.People who drink sugary beverages frequently are more likely to have poorer memory, smaller overall brain volume, and a significantly smaller hippocampus – an area of the brain important for learning and memory, said the study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfA follow-up study, published in the journal Stroke, found that people who drank diet soda daily were almost three times as likely to develop stroke and dementia when compared to those who did not. Scientists have put forth various hypotheses about how artificial sweeteners may cause harm, from transforming gut bacteria to altering the brain’s perception of “sweet,” but “we need more work to figure out the underlying mechanisms”, said Boston University’s Matthew Pase, who is lead author on the two studies. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveFor the studies, researchers used data from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS), a study that aims to identify common factors or characteristics that contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD).”These studies are not the be-all and end-all, but it’s strong data and a very strong suggestion,” said Sudha Seshadri, Professor at Boston University School of Medicine (MED) in the US.”It looks like there is not very much of an upside to having sugary drinks, and substituting the sugar with artificial sweeteners doesn’t seem to help,” Seshadri, who is senior author on both papers, said. Excess sugar has long been associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases like obesity, heart disease and Type-2 diabetes, but little is known about its long-term effects on the human brain. He chose to study sugary drinks as a way of examining overall sugar consumption. “It’s difficult to measure overall sugar intake in the diet,” he says, “so we used sugary beverages as a proxy.”Researchers also found that higher intake of diet soda–at least one per day–was associated with smaller brain volume. They found that people who drank at least one diet soda per day were iathree times as likely to develop stroke and dementia. IANSlast_img read more

How walnuts can help control appetite

first_imgMunching on walnuts may help control hunger pangs, according to a study which found that the snack activates an area in the brain associated with regulating appetite. “It was pretty surprising to see evidence of activity changing in the brain related to food cues, and by extension what people were eating and how hungry they feel,” said Olivia M Farr from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the US. Walnut, the single-seeded stone fruit, is rich in omega-3 fats, protein, antioxidants, plant sterols, magnesium, copper, Vitamins A, D, etc. Consumption of walnuts suppresses your hunger. It makes you feel fuller for a longer duration thereby helping you in your weight loss trail. Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe how consuming walnuts changes activity in the brain. They recruited 10 volunteers with obesity for two five- day sessions. A controlled environment allowed researchers to keep tabs on the volunteers’ exact nutritional intake, rather than depend on volunteers’ often unreliable food records.During one five-day session, volunteers consumed daily smoothies containing 48 grammes of walnuts. During their other stay in the clinic, they received a walnut-free but nutritionally comparable placebo smoothie, flavoured to taste exactly the same as the walnut-containing smoothie. Researchers noted that participants reported feeling less hungry during the week they consumed walnut-containing smoothies than during the week they were given the placebo smoothies.Specific hormones in the body help control appetite. Some hormones are responsible for signalling the body to eat, whereas others tell the body it is full, or satiated. Eating food rich in PUFAs, like walnuts, can influence the appetite hormones so that one can feel fuller for longer. Adding that appetite hormones play an important role in regulating how much an individual eats. Other foods rich in PUFAs include oily fish such as salmon and corn, grapeseed or canola oil. The control diet was comprised of 7% polyunsaturated fat, 15% monounsaturated fat and 13% saturated fat, compared to the PUFA-rich diet which was 21% polyunsaturated fat. While in the machine, participants were shown images of desirable foods like hamburgers and desserts, neutral objects like flowers and rocks, and less desirable foods like vegetables. When participants were shown pictures of highly desirable foods, fMRI imaging revealed increased activity in a part of the brain called the right insula after participants had consumed the five-day walnut-rich diet compared to when they had not.”This is a powerful measure. We know there is no ambiguity in terms of study results. When participants eat walnuts, this part of their brain lights up, and we know that is connected with what they are telling us about feeling less hungry or more full,” said Christos Mantzoros, professor of medicine at Harvard University in the US.This area of the insula is likely involved in cognitive control and salience, meaning that participants were paying more attention to food choices and selecting the less desirable or healthier options over the highly desirable or less healthy options, researchers said. When purchasing unshelled walnuts, one should avoid those with a rubbery or shrivelled appearance. Because walnuts turn rancid fairly quickly, shelled nuts should be kept in an airtight container and placed in the refrigerator, where they can keep for six months, or in the freezer, where they’ll stay fresh up to a year. Unshelled walnuts will keep fresh in any cool, dry location for six months. To preserve flavor and nutrients, avoid chopping nuts until you’re actually ready to use them.Walnuts are high calorie content food item. So one must be careful in how much they eat. Having given that warning, it is almost impossible to eat too many walnuts daily. A four ounce of walnut consumption will provide full requirement of daily fat content. The overall impact is on your weight. When the health of your heart is improved, inflammations are removed and diabetes is controlled, it must reduce weight.last_img read more

The Nike Slogan Just Do It was Inspired by the Last Words

first_imgSince the mid-1980s, Nike and its slogan has been one of the most famous sports apparel brands in the world. The Nike Inc. company currently employs nearly 50,000 people worldwide, and millions of people buy their products every day. Over the years, Nike became part of pop-culture heritage as numerous celebrities advertised the brand and sparked sportswear trends that defined the casual fashion scene. In 1985, Michael J. Fox wore a pair of custom Nike high-top sneakers throughout “Back to the Future.”Those shoes became a cultural icon; the original pair of high-tops from the movie was auctioned off in 2016 and sold for a whopping $104,000, thus becoming the most expensive pair of sneakers ever.Throughout the 1990s, Nike sports clothing was advertised by the legendary basketball player Michael Jordan. His customized Nike brand called “Air Jordan” inspired numerous young people to both play basketball and praise the brand for the rest of their lives. However, the brand’s popularity reached epic proportions from 1988 onwards, after Nike introduced their famous slogan “Just Do It.”The slogan was a part of an extremely successful advertising campaign which targeted Americans regardless of age, gender, or level of physical ability and encouraged them to lead a life of health, fitness, and excitement. Many prominent athletes advertised Nike footwear and inspired young people to wear the brand’s apparel. The success of the campaign turned the slogan into a popular fashion statement. All over the world, young people began wearing Nike clothes for regular everyday occasions, instead of just sports. This led to an overall increase of Nike’s popularity; in the world of casual fashion, the 1990s can easily be called “The Nike Decade.” The slogan was introduced by Dan Wieden, the co-founder of Wieden+Kennedy, the agency in charge of Nike’s advertising campaigns. The slogan quickly spread throughout the world and became a timeless inspirational message of health, fitness, sports, entertainment, and tolerance. Advertising Age magazine listed the “Just Do It” campaign as one of the best and most successful marketing campaigns of the 20th century and praised it for being both “universal and intensely personal.”The slogan’s origin story is rather fascinating. Wieden came up with the famous line during a meeting at the Wieden+Kennedy advertising agency and was inspired by none other than the notorious murderer Gary Gilmore.Gary Gilmore mugshotIn July 1976, Gilmore robbed a gas station in Orem, Utah, and viciously murdered the clerk. The next day, he robbed a motel in Provo, Utah, and killed the manager. Gilmore was quickly apprehended because of his inability to hide the evidence. He accidentally shot himself during the motel robbery and left a trail of blood around town. Due to the cruel and gruesome nature of his murders, he was sentenced to death.Gilmore was executed by firing squad at Utah State Prison.Wieden’s inspiration for the famous slogan came from Gilmore’s last words, “let’s do it.” After Gilmore was sentenced to death, he chose to be executed by a firing squad and urged authorities to execute him as soon as possible since he had accepted the verdict and wanted to die.He received two stays of execution, which were a result of the efforts of his mother and the American Civil Liberties Union. The stays of execution enraged him and caused him to attempt suicide. He was finally executed on Jan. 17, 1977. Before the riflemen fired their shots, he uttered his official last words: “let’s do it.”Read another story from us: The fictional supervillain Joker was inspired by a German actor named Conrad Veidt in the 1940sA slightly altered version of these words became one of the most popular slogans in the history of advertising and one of the most famous taglines of the 20th century. Pure coincidence caused Wieden to recognize the potential of Gilmore’s words, which were spoken at the very end of his life, and to turn them into a universal message of encouragement and inspiration.last_img read more

Frozen in Time The Citizens of Pompeii Fossilized by Volcanic Ash

first_imgMost of the written accounts on ancient Rome focus on politics, military matters, and the lives of wealthy and powerful people. But there is Pompeii, the city frozen in time, where one can see and learn about the life of lower-class people and slaves 2,000 years ago. It was believed that Pompeii was lost forever in one of the worst and most well-known volcanic eruptions of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The Roman town was buried under 13 to 20 feet of volcanic ash and pumice, but it was accidentally rediscovered in the 18th century. To everyone’s surprise, Pompeii was perfectly preserved with all its homes, artwork, shops — and spooky fossils of its residents.Plaster casts of victims, Pompeii, Italy. Photo by Tyler Bell CC BY2.0Mount Vesuvius’ eruption on August 24, 79 AD is considered one of the worst and deadliest recorded volcanic eruptions, to this day. The volcano had been dormant for many years before that day when it cataclysmically erupted with a force comparable to that of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.Plaster cast of Pompeii resident. Photo by klndonnelly CC BY2.0The entire city of Pompeii was wiped out, as well as the neighboring cities of Stabiae, Herculaneum, and Oplonti. Thousands of people were killed by the heat, poisonous gases, and hot ash and pumice that rained down. According to written accounts, there was nothing unusual about that day, only that the animals were acting strangely. And when the volcano exploded, the people in the path of the eruption were unable to escape. Most of the information we have today about Mount Vesuvius’ massive eruption comes from an account written by Pliny the Younger, who observed the tragedy from across the Bay of Naples at the Roman military port of Misenum.Body shapes of victims after the Mount Vesuvius eruption, Pompeii, Italy. He vividly described the natural catastrophe and sent his writings as letters addressed to his friend, the Roman politician and historian Cornelius Tacitus. His letters were discovered in the 16th century.About three-quarters of Pompeii’s 165 acres have been excavated. In his detailed report, Pliny tells that the eruption caught everyone by surprise and that his mother was the first to notice “a cloud of unusual size and appearance.”Excavated Pompeian who was buried in the ash from eruption of Vesuvius volcano in 79 BC.Describing the cloud, he adds: “The cloud was rising from a mountain at such a distance we couldn’t tell which, but afterward learned that it was Vesuvius. I can best describe its shape by likening it to a pine tree. It rose into the sky on a very long “trunk” from which spread some “branches.” I imagine it had been raised by a sudden blast, which then weakened, leaving the cloud unsupported so that its own weight caused it to spread sideways. Some of the cloud was white, in other parts, there were dark patches of dirt and ash.”Plaster casts of the victims covered in ash in Pompeii, Italy. In 1748, the site of Pompeii was rediscovered by accident, during construction of a palace for Charles of Bourbon. To everyone’s great surprise, Pompeii was intact, with its buildings, artifacts, and skeletons of the victims frozen in time. The discovery was of a great importance as it taught us a lot about everyday life in the ancient world. The morning after the eruption, the cone of the volcano collapsed with an an avalanche of mud and ash. Pompeii and Herculaneum completely disappeared, thought to be lost forever. The bodies, the houses, jewelry, art, and scrolls were kept preserved for centuries thanks to the ash and molten debris produced in considerable amounts by the devastating eruption.A plaster cast of a man in his last moments. Pompeii, Italy.Today, Pompeii is a vast archaeological site protected by UNESCO. During the excavation, the team realized that most of the skeletons they found were surrounded by a void. High-quality plaster was poured into the cavities, and detailed casts were created of the frozen in time citizens of Pompeii who lost their lives during the eruption.Read another story from us: 2000-year-old preserved loaf of bread found in the ruins of PompeiiMount Vesuvius had erupted 30 times since 79 AD and scientists believe that its next eruption will be immense. There are some 600,000 Italians living within the volcano’s red zone whose lives are endangered.last_img read more

The Herd Hierarchy after NFL Week 4

first_imgCheck back next week and see who’s rising and who’s falling in The Herd Hierarchy after a massive Week 5..@ColinCowherd‘s NFL Power Rankings. pic.twitter.com/zFUp38RA1y— Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) October 5, 2016 After all the games from the week are in the book, Colin releases his weekly NFL Power Rankings. It’s The Herd Hierarchy. There’s a lot of movement in the Top 10 this week, with a surprise team making their first appearance, and a new team grabbing the top spot. The Vikings are rolling. Tom Brady is finally free. And the Rams are for real.Often imitated, but never duplicated, it’s The Herd Hierarchy after 4 weeks of the 2016 NFL season.10. L.A. Rams – Colin doesn’t understand how the Rams are here, but here they are. The Rams are 3-1 and tied for the NFC West lead despite being last in Yards Per Play (4.62), and Yards per Game (269.0). So, who are they? Why are The Rams here? The Rams Defense, led by all-world tackle Aaron Donald, is third in the NFL in takeaways (9), and a legit force. Case Keenum has made #1 pick Jared Goff an afterthought. Since Week 14 of last season, he’s 6-2, and tied for the best winning percentage amongst all NFL quarterbacks. How long can they keep winning? Who knows. But, they’ve been better than anyone expected. That late-game Keenum MAGIC?!Yup. It’s happening. And the @RamsNFL just took the lead in Arizona. #LAvsAZ https://t.co/0L3fP7VWBk— NFL (@NFL) October 2, 2016 5. Philadelphia Eagles – Rookie Carson Wentz has shattered the quarterback learning curve, and is an early season MVP candidate for the 3-0 Eagles. Philly is 1st in Time of Possession, and 2nd in the NFL with 30.7 Points Per Game. Colin is a believer in first year head coach Doug Pederson, who looks like an elite coach so far. The Eagles look to keep the momentum rolling in Week 5 after an early season bye week.Shot 8 – Perfect 3-lvl stretch. Great poise by Wentz (subtle move in pocket) & great block by Sproles – not just caching passes on 3rd down! pic.twitter.com/SGztA8xZCG— Fran Duffy (@fduffy3) September 27, 2016 3. Denver Broncos – The last two times the Broncos started 4-0, they made it to the Super Bowl. Colin still has questions about the Broncos offense, which may start rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch this week. He doesn’t have any such questions about their defense, led by quarterback terrorist Von Miller. They’re 1st in the NFL in Sacks and Yards Per Play, 5th in Points Allowed Per Game, and giving up the second least Passing Yards Per Game  in the league (169).ANOTHER turnover forced by the @Broncos defense…When will it stop? #Broncos #DENvsTB https://t.co/CNhcSSCksE— NFL Network (@nflnetwork) October 2, 2016 4. Seattle Seahawks – The Seahawks are 3-1, but have struggled with a reorganized offensive line and a hobbled Russell Wilson. The Seahawks secured a huge 10-point road win against the Jets at MetLife in Week 4. Colin is still cautious, because their 3 wins have come against NFL bottom feeders with a combined record of 3-9. The Seahawk defense has been keeping them in close games. They’re 2nd in the NFL with 4.53 yards per game, 4th in sacks, and 3rd in the league with 13.5 Points Per Game allowed. One hand is as good as two if you’re Jimmy Graham ?@Seahawks v @nyjets highlights on BBC Two NOW ?#BBCNFL #Seahawks #Jets pic.twitter.com/c16V3oW4eS— #OnlyInTheNFL (@NFLUK) October 4, 2016 7. Dallas Cowboys – Dallas is 3-1 behind rookie Dak Prescott, who’s 131 pass attempts without an interception to start a career is 2nd only to Tom Brady (162).  He’s also been extending drives. His 50% 3rd down conversion rate is the best in the NFL. Ezekiel Elliott started slow, but leads the NFL in rushing (412 yards). The Cowboys young roster enters the toughest portion of their schedule, facing the Bengals, Packers, Eagles and Steelers over the next 5 weeks.Ezekiel Elliott is going to be a legend for the Cowboys… #FeedZeke pic.twitter.com/A8PPZvgfg3— Buckeye Videos+ (@BuckeyeVideos) October 3, 2016 8. Oakland Raiders – Colin’s preseason prediction that the Raiders would finish 10-6 and win the AFC West is right on track. He still doesn’t think they’re a Super Bowl team. The Raiders 3 -1 start is their best since their last Super Bowl appearance in 2002. The Silver and Black, led by emerging franchise quarterback David Carr is 2nd in the NFL in Yards Per Play, and 3rd in total offense. The Raiders o-line has only allowed two sacks on the year. What would you name this @RAIDERS play ft. @derekcarrqb to @KingCrab15?Tweet us! Bradford has 8 touchdown passes against 0 interceptions on the season. The last time the Vikings were 4-0, they made it to the NFC Championship (2009). They have the youngest of the elite NFL defenses, and lead the NFL with a +10 turnover differential through 4 weeks. They’ve held opponents under 20 points in 8 straight games, which is the longest streak in the league. The Vikings have a Super Bowl roster, and are the new #1 in The Herd Hierarchy. Pittsburgh Steelers – Big Ben and the Steelers have featured a heavy dose of big plays. They’re 3-1 for the 5th time since 2005, with their only loss on the year coming at the hands of the surprising Eagles. 3 of the last 4 times they started 3-1, they made it to the Super Bowl. All-Pro running back Le’Veon Bell was impressive in his return from a 3 game suspension, racking up 144 yards against the Chiefs. Pittsburgh  49% 3rd down conversion rate is 2nd in the NFL. The biggest liability for the Steelers has been their 30th ranked pass defense, which was exposed against the Eagles..@L_Bell26 looks to be in top form in his season debut ?Yet another weapon for the @steelers. #KCvsPIThttps://t.co/KPxM2cKy4T— NFL Network (@nflnetwork) October 3, 2016 2. New England Patriots – The Pats are 3-1 through 4 games with Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett under center. This week they’ll slightly upgrade  when Tom Brady makes his return from his 4-game Deflategate suspension.  Defensive leader Rob Ninkovich also returns from a 4-game suspension. Gronk only has 1 catch so far this season, and has been limited by a nagging hamstring injury. He’ll need to get healthy for the Patriots to make a Super Bowl run, but don’t expect Belichick to rush him along with New England already in the driver seat for the division.Tom Brady loosens up at practice with some downfield passing. pic.twitter.com/VzRjyIz4BZ— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) October 5, 2016 9. Atlanta Falcons – Colin hates dome teams, but Matty Ice has been a man on fire, leading the most potent offense in the league through 4 weeks. He leads the NFL in passer rating, completion percentage, pass yards, and passing touchdowns. The Falcons have scored the 5th most points through 4 games of any NFL team since the merger with 152.  Julio Jones has been the best wideout in the NFL this season. Colin has been slow to jump on the Falcons, but he’s coming around. Here is @M_Ryan02 and @juliojones_11 both setting franchise records.#JetJones – 300 yds rec#MattyIce – 503 passhttps://t.co/tHNYzU09OA— Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) October 2, 2016last_img read more
