Have you ever wondered why your body doesn’t evolve? After all, it is kind of like a population of trillions of organisms. Why shouldn’t it follow the rules of natural selection? Philip Ball asked this question in News@Nature recently. “Evolution is usually thought of as something that happens to whole organisms,” he teased. “But there’s no fundamental reason why, for multicelled organisms, it shouldn’t happen within a single organism too.” So why haven’t you evolved into something else by now? The answer is as fascinating as it is unexpected: your body works overtime to keep you from evolving:It’s not easy making a human. Getting from a fertilized egg to a full-grown adult involves a near-miracle of orchestration, with replicating cells acquiring specialized functions in just the right places at the right times. So you’d think that, having done the job once, our bodies would replace cells when required by the simplest means possible. Oddly, they don’t. Our tissues don’t renew themselves by mere copying, with old skin cells dividing into new skin cells and so forth. Instead, they keep repeating the laborious process of starting each cell from scratch. Now scientists think they know why: it could be nature’s way of making sure that we don’t evolve as we grow older. And it’s a good thing the body prevents you from evolving. Ball explains that mutants would have a selective advantage to hijack your other cells without doing any work: “mutant cells that don’t do their specialized job so well tend to replicate more quickly than non-mutants, and so gain a competitive advantage, freeloading off the others,” he explained. “In such a case, our wonderfully wrought bodies could grind to a halt.” My, what would Charles Darwin think of that. This is too funny. Not only did the pro-evolutionist writer Philip Ball knock off another Darwinian concept in the pro-Darwin rag Nature, he praised our “wonderfully wrought bodies” with their “near-miracle of orchestration” in language that would warm the heart of any believer in intelligent design. My, what would Phillip Johnson think of that.(Visited 6 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0

Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now The word “invest” means to put money into something expecting a return in the future. The results you want are very much like the return you expect from an investment of money, but most of what you might desire doesn’t require an investment of money. Instead, it requires an investment of time, attention, and effort. Are You Invested? If you make a minimal, one-time investment, you will receive an equally small return on that investment. If you make a reasonable investment, you might get a slightly higher return, having put more in. However, if you invest a large amount consistently, the performance will match your investment. What type of investment are you making in your goals and ambitions? As it pertains to the things you claim are important to you, how large is your investment and how consistently are you making it?Some Investments You Might ConsiderThe Investment in Your Health: There is no more significant investment than the one you make in your health. Every result you produce depends on this one, and that makes it an excellent choice for a substantial, consistent investment. Are you investing enough? Are you investing consistently? The Investment in Your Personal Growth: This bullet point is almost redundant, but it isn’t. If you are the most excellent resource you will ever have, and if you own that asset free and clear, why wouldn’t you invest in its improvement? The Investment in Your Soul: Soul. Spirit. Consciousness. That part of you that seems to live outside of yourself. The investment you make here multiplies all your other investments. This is another investment in your overall health. The Investment in Your Relationships: The reason to make the investments above is so you can maximize the investment you make in relationships, life’s most major currency and the one by which you are most likely to judge your success. The Investment in Your Business and Finances: If you want choices, freedom, and the ability to make a greater contribution, you need to invest in your business and financial results. Money isn’t everything, but it isn’t nothing either. It may not be most important, and you wouldn’t want to trade for anything above, but it’s worth investing in gaining enough—and then more than enough. When you put money in most investment vehicles, you may or may not realize a return, no matter how safe the bet seems, and no matter who else might be making the same investment. There is simply no vehicle more certain to provide a return that exceeds the investment you make in yourself.

As many as 29 residents, including 22 women, of Gopapur village under Khallikote police station in Odisha’s Ganjam district were arrested on Tuesday night for their alleged involvement in torture of six persons, aged between 55 and 65 years, over suspicion of witchcraft. The arrested persons claimed the victims were witchcraft practitioners who were responsible for diseases and deaths in Gopapur.“On the night of September 30, eight teeth of each victim were uprooted and they were forced to eat human excreta. They were also beaten up and forcibly restrained at a community hall in the village,” said Sub-Divisional Police Officer Utkal Keshari Dash. On October 1, after receiving information about the incident, a police team reached the village to rescue the victims but faced stiff opposition from the villagers who threw chilli powder and stones at them.“The police managed to rescue the victims and admitted them to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Later, the accused persons were rounded up and arrested,” said inspector-in-charge of Khallikote police station Satyaranjan Pradhan.Tensions gripped Gopapur two weeks ago after some villagers suddenly fell sick and three of them died. The villagers alleged some sorcery practitioners were causing the ailments and deaths. On September 28, more persons fell ill and the villagers started collecting money to call up a sorcerer to identify the alleged witchcraft practitioners. The same day, the Ganjam district administration and the police tried to intervene and make the villagers see reason.Medical teamOn September 30, a medical team from MKCG Medical College and Hospital reached the village to take blood samples of the inhabitants for tests and treat the sick. New Delhi, Sep 13 (ANI): India’s economy is expected to grow 5.3 percent this fiscal year, sharply lower than an earlier estimate of 6.4 percent but higher than last year, the prime minister’s economic advisory panel said on Friday. The revised forecast is roughly in line with projections of the RBI and many private economists, who expect Asia’s third-largest economy to grow at around 5 percent, the same level as in 2012-2013. A pick-up in automobile production and exports in August indicated that the manufacturing sector would do better in the second half than the first, said C. Rangarajan, the chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council. The advisory council also said that containing the fiscal deficit within the budgeted target of 4.8 percent of gross domestic product could be a challenge.

The BSE Sensex was down 15 points to 32,560. Most of the bank stocks were trading with losses, barring Punjab National Bank that was up almost 1 percent at Rs 159.The RBI’s monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting ends amid retail inflation hitting a new low of 1.54 percent for June, raising expectations of a cut in the key interest rate (repo rate) by a minimum 25 basis points with some hoping for 50 basis point cut. Currently, the repo rate is 6.25 percent. Also read: Interest rate cut on savings deposits augurs well for banks, say Nomura analystsThe meeting also comes in the backdrop of a cut in savings deposits by State Bank of India from 4 to 3.5 percent in the wake of rising deposits following demonetisation. The situation is an outcome of a dilemma faced by banks, according to an analyst.”Deposit growth had surged in wake of demonetisation given the sharp jump in liquidity. This surplus liquidity had seen banks lower their lending rates earlier this year. With remonetisation on track in recent months, deposits have been flowing out thereby raising the incremental funding costs. Hence, to protect margins – which are already under pressure due to rising bad loans, higher due diligence – banks likely mulled over higher lending rates or lower deposit rates – they went with the latter,” Radhika Rao, an economist at DBS Bank, said in a note on Wednesday. It should also be seen as an indicator of expectations of consistent fall in inflation that could lead to a fall in lending rates in the near future. Falling interest rates on fixed deposits along with savings deposits could push investors towards equities and mutual funds in search of better returns.Stocks bucking the downward trend included Hero Motocorp, NTPC and Lupin.
