Premier Darrell Dexter congratulated the Halifax Mooseheads on an outstanding season of junior hockey, capped off today, May 26, with the club’s first Canadian Hockey League title. The Mooseheads beat the Portland Winterhawks 6-4 in the championship game of the Mastercard Memorial Cup at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. “This is a special group of young men who have accomplished something truly great,” said Premier Dexter. “It’s been an exciting journey for Moose fans, culminating with tonight’s big win against a tough opponent. And I can tell you they were cheering extra loud in my community of Cole Harbour for Nathan MacKinnon’s hat trick. “On behalf of all Nova Scotians and Mooseheads fans everywhere, I want to congratulate the entire team on its Memorial Cup win and a historic season. Enjoy this moment.” Premier Dexter acknowledged captains Stefan Fournier and Trey Lewis, and congratulated head coach Dominique Ducharme on being named 2013 CHL Coach of the Year, and Jonathan Drouin on being named CHL Player of the Year. It is the first time the Mooseheads have won awards in either category. The Mooseheads, who lost just six games in the regular season and one in the playoffs, were ranked first in the CHL going into the Memorial Cup. This victory makes the Mooseheads the third straight team from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to win the Memorial Cup.
Pharmacy manager Haroon Shaffiq told the Derby Telegraph: “I think it was a case of Henry one baseball bat nil.”I came down as soon as I was rung about the incident and when I got here Raffique was speaking so quickly.”He was clearly in shock at what he had been through.”He told me he just acted on instinct and picked up the Henry and starting fighting with the man with the baseball bat.”It must have been terrifying for him.””Raffique said he thought it was a joke and started laughing but then realised he was being serious and started fighting him off with the Henry. When a wannabe-thief brandishing a baseball bat entered a chemist in Derby earlier this month he was hoping to make off with cash from the till.He wasn’t expecting to be thwarted by a staff member wielding a Henry vacuum cleanerCCTV footage shows the moment the robber came into the store at around 11.20pm on September 2, demanding staff hand over cash. But worker Raffique Chaudhery, who was cleaning the store, used the vacuum to keep the bat-wielding thug at bay.The clip shows the unknown man then damaging the shop counter with the bat before fleeing empty-handed. Credit:Google “[Co-worker] Gaffer [Ahmed] was behind the counter and swore back at the man who then leaned forward and tried to get the till open but he couldn’t.”He then smashed at the screen of the till completely destroying it before finally running out empty handed.According to Mr Shaffiq the incident was the first time anyone has tried to rob the store in the 12 years it’s been open.”We have a real community presence here in Osmaston and Allenton,” he said, “and the customers have been fantastic since it happened.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp?
