New Music Monday: Stars

first_img Why Are All These Celebrities Shotgunning Beers? Editors’ Recommendations Jonathan Van Ness on Pride, Smirnoff Moscow Mules, and Game of Thrones The Lazy Man’s Guide on How to Make Hard Apple Cider How to Buy a Suit: 6 Simple Tips to Keep in Mind Stars released their new album No One Is Lost on October 14th on ATO Records. The follow-up to 2012’s The North, No One Is Lost is comprised of 11 original songs and was produced by Stars and Liam O’Neil (Metric, The Stills). For No One Is Lost, Stars craved autonomy, and serendipitously inherited the Mile End rehearsal space last December above the now defunct, Royal Phoenix nightclub in Montreal. Stars built a functional studio out of the former space of then-disbanding Handsome Furs (and site of Arcade Fire’s first rehearsals); Mile End became a home away from home. Then the nightclub (and life) crept in, resulting in Stars’ most urgent record to date. Drummer Pat McGee explains, “The sub-bass throb coming from the club below our studio was undeniably and unavoidably influential. It motivated us to out-throb the throb.”“This record’s called No One Is Lost because that is a fucking lie,” says Torquil. “We are all lost, we are all going to lose this game and, as you get older, you lose people more and more. I just wanted to close my eyes and jump and hope that was true. Life is loss, love is loss. And loving people is about accepting that you’re going to have to say goodbye to them. And that’s why it’s fucking brave. That’s Stars ethos: this life is very heartbreaking and sad… so let’s get completely fucking arseholed and listen to some Dionne Warwick.”Download No One Is Lost on iTunes or Amazon!https://sp2.img.hsyaolu.com.cn/wp-shlf1314/B2046/IMG252.jpg” alt=”last_img” /> read more

Date set for Pistorius bail appeal in South African court

first_imgSOUTH AFRICAN OLYMPIC and Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, will approach South Africa’s High Court next week to appeal his stringent bail conditions, prosecutors said Friday.“The date for the hearing has been set down for March 28,” said Bulelwa Makeke, the spokeswoman for the National Prosecuting Authority. The bail conditions imposed on February 22 include the surrender of his passport, making it impossible for Pistorius to travel outside the country, and mandatory drug and alcohol tests. He was also banned from talking to residents of his upmarket gated community in Pretoria, where he shot his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day.The 26-year-old, who became the first double amputee to compete against able-bodied athletes in the Olympic Games last year in London, is currently out on bail of one million rand ($107,000, 83,000 euros). He has denied a charge that the murder was premeditated, insisting that he repeatedly shot at Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door having mistaken her for a burglar. His arrest and bail hearing made world headlines, forcing him to withdraw from all competitions.Several local and international sponsors have also cancelled deals with the athlete.- © AFP, 2013Jennifer Capriati faces charges for attacking ex-boyfriend>Remember Jerry Kiernan’s anti-GAA rant?
